Estate & Gift Tax Planning: in more detail
For families with substantial or appreciating assets, well-considered gifting and trust strategies can reduce future estate taxes and support a lasting family legacy. We work with your tax and financial advisors to weigh the opportunities alongside your needs for access, flexibility, and financial security.
- Spousal lifetime access trusts (SLATs)
- Annual exclusion and lifetime gifting
- Portability elections for married couples
- Coordination with your CPA and financial advisor
- Estates that may exceed the federal exemption
- Families with appreciating real estate or stock
Lifetime gifts mean giving up access to and control over what you transfer, and carry income-tax trade-offs. Portability of a spouse’s unused exclusion requires a timely election and eligibility. A SLAT is designed to keep transferred property and its growth outside both spouses’ taxable estates only when the applicable requirements are met.
How a SLAT works
- Youthe donor spouse
- then: lifetime gift
- SLATirrevocable trustYour spouse can receive distributions during their lifetime
- then: after your spouse's lifetime
- Childrenor later generations
Designed to exclude the transferred property and its growth from both spouses' taxable estates when applicable requirements are met.
Asset Protection Planning: in more detail
Property ownership, business interests, and professional responsibilities bring distinct risks. Coordinated entity and trust planning can help separate certain liabilities and provide a more protective framework for the inheritance you leave to the next generation.
- LLCs for rental and investment properties
- Family limited partnerships (FLPs)
- Protective trust provisions for heirs
- Landlords and real estate investors
- Physicians, dentists and other medical professionals
- Owners of medical and dental practices
Protection varies by asset, ownership structure, and claim, and no structure guarantees it. A revocable living trust does not shield your assets from your own creditors, and an entity does not eliminate liability for your own professional negligence.
Charitable Planning: in more detail
A charitable remainder trust can bring together your philanthropic intentions and your family’s financial planning. It can provide payments to you or loved ones, leave the remainder to charitable causes you value, and offer tax benefits when the applicable requirements are met.
- Charitable remainder trusts (CRTs)
- Charitable gifts built into your trust
- Owners of highly appreciated property or stock
- Families with a giving tradition to pass on
The trust is irrevocable. Deductions are subject to limits, and payments to individual beneficiaries may be taxable.
